Unless otherwise stipulated by the client, our audits are conducted following the requirements of ISO 19011. We endorse the use the systematic processes to ensure audit objectivity and comprehensiveness. When we assist you with conducting an audit, you receive a product that will conform with registration audit or third party verification requirements. EMS, OHSMS and System Integration Gap Analyses One of the first steps in developing and implementing an EMS or OHSMS is to identify what elements of existing business systems can be used or modified to meet certification requirements. We can examine your business to determine what elements are in place and what will need to be developed in order to achieve ISO 14001 or OHSAS 18001 registration. If you have an existing ISO 9001 Quality Management System, we can determine the best way to integrate the management systems in order to avoid duplication and strains on limited resources. EMS and OHSMS Internal Audits We have experience providing qualified lead auditors to assist organizations with completing their EMS and/or OHSMS internal audit using an internal team of auditors. Typically, we would use the organization's audit procedures and protocol, if available. In their absence, we provide program documents modified to meet that organization's document control requirements. The result is an audit report that looks like an internal document with nonconformances presented in an easy to understand format. If your audit program stipulates that the lead auditor prepares the nonconformance reports, this can be provided as well, with the appropriate follow-up. SFM System Internal Audits With forest certification fast becoming a business requirement of the forest industry, it is also becoming essential that internal audits become more than occasional checks on the contractor to make sure he is not leaking fuel or cutting outside the buffers. At Birchwood Environmental Management Inc., we have experience with designing and conducting meaningful internal audit programs for forestry operations. Given the logistical issues surrounding forestry audits, we promote the use of a combined EMS/SFM/Compliance Audit Program. One audit covers all your certification requirements, it requires less time of staff and contractors, and all audit findings can be addressed at the same time. Regulatory Compliance Audits Compliance with environmental legislation is often not easy. Just when you think everything is in order, you find out about yet another legal requirement. Regulatory compliance issues are most often related to lack of knowledge. You need to track changes to legislation at the federal, provincial and municipal levels; and you need to monitor compliance. We can help you with these requirements by providing comprehensive regulatory compliance audits. Even if you have not yet identified your legal requirements, we can conduct an audit by first identifying what acts, regulations, permits, guidelines, etc., are applicable, and then using our own checklists, conduct an audit of your facilities and activities.
